Keyboard Focus

Description

 
Relevant WCAG Guideline(s): *WCAG 2.4.3

Technique: All form elements (i.e., links, buttons, checkboxes, etc.) should receive a visible focus cursor when navigating by keyboard alone.

Key Considerations: Do all elements (i.e., links, buttons, checkboxes, etc.) receive focus? Do all elements keep the same visual focus indicator, or does the focus change color/style/size from one element to the next?

Keystrokes: Tab key
 

Techniques

 
Start by moving the cursor to the top of the page. This can be done by:

  • Ctrl +Home, or
  • Click the mouse so that the focus is at the top of the page.

Now, use one of the techniques listed below to test keyboard operability:

Using the keyboard alone:

  • Use the Tab key to move from one element to the next. Take note that all keyboard navigable elements receive visual focus. Additionally, take note of any changes in the focus indicator (i.e., color, style, size) from one element to the next.
